The Book Chat - Are you a writer?

Photobucket

It is Thursday once again. The chat is hosted as always by Jessica from Sweet Green Tangerine and today her co-host is Kimberly from The Simplicity of Being Curious

Am I an aspiring author?
Yes.

Have I ever actually written a book?
No.

I've always loved reading books. It wasn't until my sophomore year of high school that I found out I love to write. My school offered a creative writing class. The class was taught by my literature teacher, who I loved. So... I signed up. I immediately fell in love with putting pen to paper and just spilling my soul onto the page. That class was my favorite. I couldn't wait to get there every day and see what the writing topic would be.

Since that class I've had that pull in me to write a book. I can feel it just waiting to get out.
BUT I don't know how to make it happen. I don't know how to make it work. I do know that someday I'd love to walk into a book store and see my name on the cover of a book. A book I wrote and finished. A book people want to read. I just need to figure out how to get there. That journey has to begin with a story. That's the hardest part... The story. I have them floating around on my head but none of them feel right.

An author came to our class one day to speak to us. Shame on me for not remembering her name or much of what she said. I do remember her saying something like: The only way you will be a good writer is if you write everyday. You have to! It has to be part of your life.

Sadly I don't write everyday. Unless you count blogging. I don't sit down and REALLY write. I know I should. I know I need to. Maybe this book chat topic will be my push to do just that. Perhaps when I have a published book you'll find me thanking the book chat in my acknowledgments....

  1. One of the reasons I started blogging was to write more!(which, at times, feels a bit insane to me since I writing is my major and I write A LOT. Yet I'm never satisfied with the amount of writing that I do. Always want more, kinda like books!). Even though blogging is a very different kind of writing than creative writing, I like to think I'm still exercising some of the same creativity muscles.

  2. You and me both on being an "aspiring author." I started last year with NaNoWriMo but have since scrapped that novel and started a new one. :)

Like you I don't write every day either, not yet. When I did NaNo I wrote every day and went into the approach of going in with no plan and just freewriting. It felt great. However I've been reading LOTS of books on writing, taking in what applies and appeals to me, and realized that I need to plan. So I'm in the planning stage just getting my ideas down and sorting them out as to when and where but leaving plenty of room for freewriting. Once I get a nice outline I'm going for it and will write every day.

    Cheers to my fellow writers!

  3. Haha. That would be AWESOME! It is very hard, as a SAHM, to find the routine in writing. It's rare to have a quiet, alone moment when you're not busy cleaning, cooking or sleeping. And writing WITH kids around...forget it. I write when I can, but I know it's going to take discipline and routine to really make something happen.
    Great post. thanks for sharing.

  4. YES! I hope I'm thanking this link up in my acknowledgements page someday, too. You're right, this topic does make me want to get on it and start writing already!
