Strangers!

A while ago I was at Burger King. This woman came up to me and said, "can you keep an eye on my daughter while I take my son to the bathroom?"
Before I could answer she quickly walked away.
My heart started racing "Is she crazy? What if I was nuts and wanted to steal her baby?"
She was gone maybe 6 minutes. Obviously I was not nuts and did not steal her baby. I can see if Noah had been with me she might have thought, "Oh this nice mom will understand my situation and help me out" but it was just me in the back of the restaurant NEAR the door. I would never leave Noah alone with a stranger for even a moment. Even now that he's seven I still tell him all the time at the store, "You have to stay by me. You can't just run off and go look at something."

You just never know what crazies might be out there.

I don't want him to be terrified about something bad happening but I want him to know that there are people out there that you can't trust.  I used to just teach him about not talking to strangers and never go anywhere with a stranger. Then I read this article.  Now I teach him what kind of strangers are "tricky".

  1. Oh my goodness! She is a very trusting soul. I would have taken them all in the bathroom with me. :)

  2. That lady is very crazy! Thats the same type of person who probably leaves their kid in the car or house alone for "just a few minutes". Yikes!

  3. I've had that happen to me before to and the first time was even before I had my own children. I think some people are too trusting or ignorant. I would have taken all of them with me into the bathroom. Perhaps you just look like a nice person? :)

My oldest boy is getting to the point where he doesn't want to go into the woman's bathroom with me anymore when we are out together but it's tough cookies, he's way to young to go into a bathroom alone. The only exception is if it's a single stall and those are not around too much anymore.

  4. That is crazy! I can't believe she would leave her kid with a stranger. I'm not a parent, but I watch my nieces a lot and they were taught about tricky people and if they get lost they know to go find a mom with kids. The world is sadly a very dangerous place and you don't know who you can trust. She should have just taken both kids to the restroom.
